Independent Governance Review Recommendations re Mental Health Governance
On 25th October, the Honorable Amber Jade Sanderson, Minister of Health, Mental Health tabled the Independent Review of WA Health System Governance report in Parliament.
https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/…/Independent-Governance… (Check out page 31 re mental health).
The review makes 55 recommendations.
Recommendation 14 (p72) states that responsibilities for policy, planning, commissioning, performance management, workforce development and clinical assurance of public mental health services should be shifted to the System Manager (WA Health). It is recommended that the Mental Health Commission would have primary prevention and oversight functions (Rec 14b).
Page 30 of the report also states: “Further consideration should also be given to which area of the System Manager should assume responsibility for commissioning and monitoring of social services commissioned from non-government organisations”. Non government organisations provide a range of services to support people in the community including (but not limited to) counselling, support groups, education and training, accommodation and harm reduction.
Lived Experience Leaders who have been involved in strategic governance will be in attendance on Tuesday night to give their perspectives.
The Government is yet to respond to the report.
It is therefore important that people with mental health, alcohol and other drug experiences are meaningfully heard to inform its response.
Everyone is welcome to the F4FWA Zoom room and discussion. Please respect this is a family/supporter space.
